American Shoguns are a surf influenced rock band from the Bay Area that have left quite an impression on those that have seen them play live. Their solid six-song demo features uplifting rock songs that are extremely well written and absolutely addictive. I’ve been listening to this album over and over again in my car, wishing that there were six more songs! Singer/songwriter Nick Nielson has this beautiful, soothing voice that compliments the songs perfectly. Each song shows off his amazing talent; especially “Pieces,” which has this wonderful rhythmic flow both vocally and instrumentally.

I’m also quite partial to the first song, “Free,” with lyrics that encourage the listener to enjoy themselves and be free of the negative things that may come up in life. Similar in style to Jack Johnson and John Mayer, American Shoguns have clever and catchy songs with a twist of surf guitar, all destined to be radio hits. This is the kind of music that you want to take with you on a road trip or to a beach party; songs that make you want to kick off your shoes and dance in the sand. Nick and his band could easily be an overnight success with the right kind of label support.
